Erratum

Fairbanks and Rytting present corrections for the chi-square values and their associated probabilities for the first seven entries in Table 2 of their paper "Mendelian controversies: a botanical and historical review" published in the May 2001 issue of American Journal of Botany (volume 88, number 5, pp. 737–752). Corrections for the first seven entries in Table 2 follow:

ERRATUM Results of chi-square tests for Mendel's Pisum sativum experiments

An error in the formula used to calculate the chi-square values halved those values for the first seven entries in the original table; the corrected chi-square values are twice those published. All other chi-square values (entries 8–22) and their associated probabilities in Table 2 are correct. These corrections require a single-word change in the text on page 738. The final sentence of the last full paragraph, as corrected, reads, "Of Mendel's 22 experiments, only four yield {chi}2 values with probabilities <0.5 and six yield {chi}2 values with probabilities >0.90, indicative of the bias toward expectation in Mendel's data (Table 2)." These changes do not affect the authors' interpretations or conclusions expressed in the paper.
